What Is Biological Dentistry?

There is a strong connection between your oral and overall health because the two are closely linked. The mouth is a window into the body. It can shed light on the presence of certain illnesses and diseases, as well as cause health issues of its own if not properly taken care of. Infection and bacteria can enter the bloodstream through the mouth. Heart disease and respiratory infections, as well as other health issues, have been linked back to this occurrence.

At Santa Teresa Smiles, we factor the connection between the mouth and the body into every examination and treatment recommendation we provide. By taking a total-wellness approach to dentistry, our goal is to help patients achieve a lifetime of great health! Contact us today to schedule an appointment!

Benefits of a Biological Dentist

Biological dentistry provides a variety of benefits, including:
  • A focus on the individual, which means that each treatment is completely customized. We’ll never provide cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all treatments to our patients.
  • Total-body approach to dentistry that involves helping patients achieve optimum health. In addition to treating general dental concerns, we also use dentistry to treat headaches, TMD symptoms, and more.
  • Non-toxic, body-friendly materials and treatments are standard practice for us and all of our patients.

Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART)

SMART illustration

Traditional silver fillings are made of a gray metallic material called amalgam. Amalgam used to be the go-to filling material. Now, thanks to advancements in dentistry, we use tooth-colored composite resin fillings that blend in with your natural tooth shade.

Amalgam silver fillings most times shift and leak throughout their life span. This can create hairline fractures in the tooth, weakening the tooth structure, or form small gaps between the surface of the tooth and the edge of the filling, which may lead to decay. At Santa Teresa Smiles, we replace defective silver amalgam fillings with a more aesthetically-pleasing, biocompatible alternative, utilizing the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART) put in place by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology.

This technique is purposefully designed to safely and effectively remove amalgam fillings. In just one appointment, we can get rid of the gray restorations in your smile and replace them with tooth-colored, biocompatible composite resin fillings that will blend in seamlessly!

Dental professionals who remove amalgam fillings must complete an advanced course and become SMART certified before they can safely remove silver fillings. Dr. Oushy is well-trained and experienced when it comes to removing amalgam fillings, placing composite fillings, and helping patients achieve happier, healthier smiles.
