Many people are looking for the most effective ways to clean their homes and kill any potential viruses that they may have brought home with them. While there is still a lot of research that needs to be done on COVID-19, we know that it is built similarly to other coronaviruses. There are a few cleaning products that have already proven helpful in eliminating COVID-19. Here are a few household items you can use to help protect your family and your home from coronavirus.

Soap

Soap is very effective at killing viruses like the coronavirus. As long as it is given enough time (at least twenty seconds), any liquid or bar soap can deactivate and remove viruses like COVID-19. This is because these viruses are enveloped in a layer of fat that holds the virus particles together. When they come in contact with soap, these outer layers are easily broken apart, effectively deactivating the virus.

Bleach

Bleach can be used to clean many surface areas within homes, and it is often used to clean and disinfect kitchens and bathrooms. However, it’s important to note that bleach should be handled carefully. It should always be diluted with water, and never be mixed with other cleaning chemicals. Bleach tablets and sprays are also a convenient way to use bleach when disinfecting your home and preventing the spread of COVID-19.

Isopropyl Alcohol

Isopropyl alcohol, or solutions that contain at least 70% isopropyl alcohol, work well to kill viruses that are present on hard surfaces like keyboards and cell phones. You can use a disinfectant spray that contains at least 70% alcohol on surfaces. Just be sure to wait at least 30 seconds before wiping it off. You can also wipe them down with an alcohol wipe. UV lights also work well for disinfecting electronics without damaging them.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a great alternative to use on surfaces that bleach can’t be used on, like metal. However, it shouldn’t be used on fabric, like furniture or clothes. You don’t have to dilute it with water either. Simply pour the hydrogen peroxide directly into a spray bottle. You can spray the areas you want to clean, and then wait at least one minute for the virus particles to be destroyed before you wipe it away.
